About 145,000 consumers across the country are at risk for identity theft after a company called Choice-Point Incorporated was scammed into allowing criminals to access its database of personal information.
Choice-Point is a spinoff of credit reporting agency Equifax, and it has 19 billion public records in its database, including military records, names, addresses and Social Security numbers.
Notices are being mailed to all possible victims.
Choice-Point says Illinois has the seventh-largest pool of affected residents. California tops the list with nearly 35,000.
