Halogen lamps have caused more than five hundred fires and contributed to some 40 deaths nationwide since 1992. Locally, many had a chance to make there home safer by exchanging their halogen lamp for a safer one.
The Rockford Lowe's held an exchange on Saturday. By bringing a halogen lamp, residents were able to purchase a similar touchier lamp for just less than $10. Experts say the problem with the halogen lamps is that they give off an incredible amount of heat.
Organizers say you should look for a lamp with this energy star label. Lamps with this are said to use 75 percent less energy and are cool enough to touch.
