Firefighters are still looking into exactly what caused a fast moving fire Wednesday in Rockford, a fire that took the life of an elderly man.
Rockford firefighters received the call at around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.
When fire crews arrived, they faced problems getting in the home after a neighbor broke a window and wind spread the fire further around the house.
Once they got inside, fire crews discovered 78-year-old William Conroy lying on the home's back porch. He was pronounced dead just after 5:30 Wednesday evening.
Winnebago County coroner Sue Fiduccia says Conroy suffered 100 percent body burns. His wife Barbara, who moved Conway out of the house, was transported to Saint Anthony's Hospital for burn treatment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Damage to the home is estimated at $170,000.
