The Shi'ite party garnered most of the votes. Kurds made up the second strongest bloc winning 25 percent of the Assembly's 275 seats.

Over eight-and-a-half million voters turned out to cast their ballots which turned out to be a 58 percent voter turnout. This is the country's first election of a national assembly since Saddam Hussein's rule ended in 2003.

Few Sunni Arabs participated in the vote saying the entire process was a U.S. controlled event. One of the first orders of business for the newly elected national assembly will be choosing a president and two vice presidents.

Final results are expected to be certified three days from now.
