Mother of two Tasha Taylor was talking to a friend on Monday night when she heard the sounds that dramatically changed her life.

"When I looked out, I saw her two boys lying on the ground. I wasn't sure if they were shot. I thought they were hitting the ground, but then I heard someone screamed to call the police, and that's when I knew something was wrong," Taylor said.

Taylor went outside to discover her two neighbors, 16-year-old Joshua Adams and 18-year-old Terrance Conner, dying. She says while occasional gunfire is a reality in Concord Commons, nothing compared to the horror of Monday night.

"It shocked and hurt because I saw this boy take his last breath and I never saw anything like that. I grew up in the projects, but I never saw anything like that," Taylor said.

Taylor's two young children weren't so lucky. Both heard the same gunshots and asked the same hard questions few mothers will ever have to answer.

"My son, the oldest one, he never watched anyone die. He's seven. I have a four-year-old, but the seven-year-old took it more like me than the four-year-old. I didn't feel like my child needed to be seeing that. He's in the window just like I am," Taylor said.

In the aftershock of Monday's murders, Taylor's children are away with other relatives. The Chicago native is now concerned her oldest son will have long lasting effects, being so close to something so shocking.

"I don't think that's something anyone should see, especially the ones that they see on an everyday basis. It's messing with my seven-year-old," Taylor said.

And with a prayer vigil scheduled for Thursday night at the scene of the double murder, Taylor wishes more will recognize the profound loss that comes from gun violence in a building, a complex, and to our community.

"I hope that all the people that hold animosity and grudges and hatred against each other; it needs to stop, because life is too short for all of this," Taylor said.
