Public Health Director Eric Whitaker says the money will help make sure hundreds of Illinois children will live in healthier homes.

The cash will be used to reduce or remove lead-based paint in about 400 low-income housing units in Illinois. The homes being targeted are in Boone, Winnebago, Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Macon, Peoria, Kane and Champaign Counties.

Lead-based paints were banned from residential use in 1978, but 24 million U.S. housing units contain deteriorating lead paint and lead-contaminated dust.

Lead poisoning can cause learning disabilities, behavioral problems and, in extreme cases, death.
