Researchers have discovered that infants as young as four months old can actually drive a robotic vehicle. A mini car called UD1 is computer driven with sensors and wheels.

It could be a major improvement for disabled kids who have to wait till they're three or five for mobilized wheelchairs.

Researchers have found the best drivers are babies who can't even crawl yet because they quickly discover this vehicle can get them around.

This is not a surprise. Three years ago our physical and occupational therapists with the cooperation of a local high school robotics team and a private consultant developed a motorized "baby walker", switch operated by the child, also equipped with sensors for steps and obstacles. This was designed for a child born without fully developed arms and legs. He was 11 months old. But, by the way, children with disabilities do not have to wait until they are 3 or 5 years old for motorized wheelchairs. We typically make sure kids who need them have them by age 2 years. Our agency would love to promote this vehicle for infant mobility, if one could be donated to our Assistive Technology Loan Closet. Not that I would really expect that to happen, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
