State records show that 1,341 people died in traffic accidents last year. That's 113 fewer than in 2003. In 1943, 1,328 people were killed in traffic accidents in the state.

State officials say the number has dropped because of aggressive enforcement of a 2003 law that allows police officers to pull over and ticket drivers who aren't wearing seat belts.

Motorists seem to be getting the message. An Illinois Transportation Department study found the number of drivers who buckled up climbed from 76 percent in 2003 to 83 percent last year.
