Interim State School Boss on Role with Revamped Board

Gov. Rod Blagojevich replaced seven of the State Board of Education's members in September under a new law meant to give the governor more power over the agency. A week later, the board hired Dunn to fill in, although he says he doesn't want the job permanently.

Dunn says he's been working with the board on three goals outlined by Blagojevich. They are reducing a backlog in teacher certification, reducing the number of rules and regulations for local school districts, and developing a major policy initiative to pursue next year.

And Dunn said he wants Illinois residents to know the board is trying to create an agency that's "more responsive to the citizens of the state of Illinois."
