Rockford will soon be home to a $40 million heart and vascular center at Swedish American Hospital. This new facility will be one of a kind in the stateline area. With the pump of a heart city leaders and community members celebrated as the new heart center begins to take life.

The facility will offer family sized rooms so family members close to the patients’ heart can stay and help repair it, something former heart patient Richard Petersen believes in.

“I think this is going to be a great help when they said they will have relatives to stay, that’s a big thing. I know I was very fortunate to have my wife with me the whole time. It meant a lot,” says Petersen.

Dr. Bill Gorski says, “That's what it's all about. Richard had a procedure not too long ago that really was preformed for the first time in the stateline here at Swedish American. What that represents is that not only do we want to have an outstanding facility but caregivers willing to offer cutting edge elements of care."

Heart disease is the single fastest growing medical problem, and with the aging of baby boomers the facility couldn't come at a better time.

“Unfortunately the incidents of heart disease continues to increase not only in the Rockford area but our entire region so if you look out into the future there's going to be a tremendous need.” says Dr. Gorski.

The new heart center will also be educating patients on heart disease since lifestyle choices are often the main cause.

The heart center will lie adjacent to the hospital but will be connected on the first floor through the lobby and through a sky bridge on the second floor. Construction is expected to be complete near the end of 2005.
