On Saturday, hundreds of World War II veterans gathered in Springfield to unveil a new memorial dedicate to what many say is the greatest generation.
The memorial features a 12-foot white concrete globe surrounded by a plaza with bricks detailing veterans' service. The dedication also featured a flyover by military jets.
The memorial is intended to remind future generations of the sacrifices then and the sacrifices many are making now to protect our freedom and livelihood.
There is space for at least 3,700 commemorative granite bricks, inscribed with biographical information about WWII veterans. Eventually, a guide will be added to help locate brick dedicated to a family member or friend.
