The Poplar Grove community, get ready for hoops season! Your North Boone Vikings have the snazziest new high school gym in the stateline.
"It's nice. The bleachers are big, the floors are new, it's a nice, new, clean facility," freshman Ashley Mulholland said.
On Wednesday the school celebrated the debut of the new gymnasium after North Boone opened the doors to its new high school this September. Now, athletics and academics both have new places to call home.
"The community should be proud of the technology and the educational opportunities. Sports just kind of brings all the pieces together nicely," Principal Christine Troller said.
But the new school and auditorium didn't come without setbacks. The North Boone district faced five failed referendums across three years before the community finally passed the $15 million referendum in 2002 to build the new high school and renovate North Boone's middle school.
"It’s hard in these economic times, but the community came together and we are thankful for that," Troller said.
And now that both the academic and athletic wings are complete, school leaders are excited about the rewards the school and community will share for the years to come.
"I've heard a lot of people say a lot of good things about it. They like the design, they like the feeling, they like the lighting, so I'm feeling very good about it," Supt. Michael Houselog said.
