Miracle Needed in Mount Morris

Barring a miracle between now and Monday, a school will not be built in the Village of Mount Morris, and the Oregon School District will continue to operate out of four schools.

That was the decision agreed upon by a strategic planning committee, made up of district board members, administrators and community members.

Under the option agreed to Tuesday evening, Jefferson Elementary will house students between Pre-K and Fourth Grade. A total of 12 new classrooms, a new gym and new cafeteria will be added there.

Fifth and 6th grade students will use the 19 classrooms available at Etnyre School, while operations at Blackhawk will not change.

The school board will likely vote on the $5.5 million proposal at its next meeting on Monday, leaving Mount Morris residents feeling cheated by the board.

Now, those parents are starting to look ahead at future options, and one of the more interesting ones is an idea that would unite Mount Morris with Leaf River in a consolidated district. Leaf River, as you may recall, has seen its own "school custody" problems in previous months.
