Federal screeners started testing the scanners Wednesday. The machine can detect residue from explosives on the surface of items like driver's licenses, wallets, passports and airline boarding passes.

The Transportation Security Administration says the technology is similar to hand-held detectors used at airline ticket counters to swab checked baggage for explosives.

Officials say it will be used for secondary screening of passengers pre-selected for extra attention or for people who set off alarms at security checkpoints.
