DOWNERS GROVE (WIFR) -- Mile post signs on the 79-mile Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) will be renumbered beginning Wednesday, October 6, as the Illinois Tollway installs new signs to conform with national roadway signage standards. The mile post numbering on this east-west route will be reversed to begin with mile post 0 at the Wisconsin state line in the west and increase going eastbound.
In addition, the new mile post signs will be installed every quarter mile and will now identify the interstate designation and the direction of travel, as well as the mile post number. Ultimately, these new signs will improve customer convenience and help emergency responders better identify locations on the Tollway.
"The I-90 milepost marker conversion not only completes the Illinois Tollway's efforts to bring milepost signage into compliance with national standards system wide, but also improves roadway safety for our customers as they travel the 286-mile Tollway System," said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur. "Through this milepost marker update, we are making our roadways safer by providing more accurate information to emergency responders, maintenance crews and motorists."
The Illinois Tollway's original mile post numbering on I-90 was established with the construction of the roadways in 1958. At that time, there were no national standards regarding mile post numbering and I-90 was numbered east to west. The renumbering of mile posts on I-90 will bring the Tollway into compliance with national standards. The new signs will be uncovered early afternoon on October 6, weather permitting.
