Donald W. Johnson already was serving a 60-year sentence for rape when Winnebago County authorities announced in 2001 that DNA evidence pointed to him as the killer in slaying of 15-year-old Rebecca Lynn Smith.
Johnson was found guilty of Smith's murder in July and he was sentenced to life Wednesday.
He had been convicted in 1990 for raping a Blue Island woman.
