The Cook County Sheriff's Department says inmates have found a way to trick victims into paying for the inmates calls. They're calling random numbers and asking those who answer to dial *72 followed by another phone number.
That allows the person at the other number to accept collect calls that will be billed to the victim's number.
Sheriff's Office spokesman Bill Cunningham says the department is investigating the situation and he says the department plans to post a number on its website soon for those who are victimized to call.
In recent weeks folks in Ogle and Boone Counties have been victims of this scam.
