ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Rockford Police Department wants to expand its force and they're looking to hire as many as 25 new officers this year.
As of last Friday, the department received 410 applications. That's down from previous years. In 2011, 777 people applied to be a Rockford cop, but only 11 made it. Earlier this year it was worse, out of the 617 people who applied only five were hired.
Police Chief Chet Epperon says candidates are failing exams and not passing drug tests. The deadline to apply is January 12, 2013.
