LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The online video service Hulu is getting into the business of creating original programming.
It's the first foray into actual production for Hulu, which launched in 2008 and is used mainly to show programs provided by ABC, Fox and NBC, the broadcasters owned by its media company parents.
Hulu is teaming up with Morgan Spurlock, the documentary maker who criticized McDonald's and fast-food eating in "Super Size Me."
Together they are creating "A Day in the Life" -- six half-hour episodes where filmmakers follow around famous people such as billionaire Richard Branson.
Hulu's senior vice president of content acquisition, Andy Forssell, insists that making shows doesn't make Hulu a competitor of its network-owning parents. He says the shows have a smaller budget and are tailored to Hulu's online audience.
