FREEPORT (HCC) -- The Highland Community College Big Band and Concert Band will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 18, in the Ferguson Fine Arts Theatre on Highland’s campus.
Highland Big Band Director Bill Petersen said the ensemble will feature new arrangements by legendary jazz composer Sammy Nestico, known for his work with Count Basie and The Airmen of Note, the prestigious big band of the United States Air Force. He added several prominent local musicians will be playing in the ensemble, including Chris Korf, Gary Brubaker, Nick Martin, John Hanson, Kevin Finkenbinder, Rick Andrews and Gary Besley.
Scott Stich, director of Highland’s concert band, describes this year’s selections as “ambitious,” running the gamut from Mummers music – evoking festive images of medieval masked performers – to soaring overtures and movies scores. The concert band performance will include diverse works from Dmitri Kabalevsky’s “Colas Breugnon,” Kenneth Hesketh’s “Masque,” Carolyn Bremer’s “Early Light,” and John William’s “Harry Potter Symphonic Suite,” taken from the Harry Potter movie “The Sorcerer’s Stone.”
Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $6 for students. Tickets may be purchased online at www.highland.edu or by calling the Highland Community College Box Office weekdays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 815.235.6127.
