CHICAGO (AP) -- Family and friends have gathered for the funeral of actor and onetime Chicago police officer Dennis Farina.
A funeral Mass was Tuesday morning at Assumption Catholic Church in downtown Chicago. An American flag was draped over Farina's casket. Burial plans are private. Farina died July 22 in Scottsdale, Ariz., after suffering a blood clot in his lung. He was 69.
Farina was raised in Chicago. He served with the Chicago Police Department for 18 years as an officer and burglary detective. He was on duty during the 1968 Chicago riots. He found his way into acting as he neared his forties and was a veteran of Chicago theater.
Farina was a character actor for three decades, appearing in movies like "Saving Private Ryan" and "Get Shorty."
