Katie Couric To Report From Iraq, Syria

NEW YORK (AP) -- Katie Couric is heading to Iraq.

She plans to leave Wednesday. This will be her first time in the war zone. Couric will also being reporting from Syria. She'll anchor the "CBS Evening News" from Baghdad next Tuesday and Wednesday, then from Damascus on Thursday and Friday.

Her trip comes ahead of a crucial military report on progress on the American effort in Iraq.

Couric will travel throughout Iraq to talk to military and civilian leaders, soldiers and average Iraqis, spending most of her time outside of Baghdad.

Couric says she's curious about very basic questions like living conditions, the fear factor on the streets and how the soldiers really are doing.
