LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Captain Jack's enemies couldn't defeat him, and "Pirates of the Caribbean 3" has opened with a predicted 142 (M) million dollars over the long Memorial Day weekend.
If the estimates hold up, the "Pirates" sequel will shatter the four-day Memorial Day weekend record set last year by "X-Men: The Last Stand," which opened with 123 (M) million dollars. Adding in Thursday night's previews, "Pirates" has grossed more than 156 (M) million dollars.
"Shrek the Third" falls to second after one week on top. It made an estimated 69 (M) million dollars.
"Spider-Man 3" is third with 18 (M) million. "Bug" premieres in fourth, "Waitress" moves up to fifth.
