10 Thousand Attend Freeport Weekend Concert

FREEPORT (WIFR) -- This weekend's concert in Freeport didn't have quite the numbers it needed.

Organizers of the Spirit of Peace and Music Festival estimate they had around 10 thousand people show up.

They admit it wasn't a very profitable event for investors and a public relations campaign didn't go as planned. However, guests said they were happy with the set-up and cleanliness of the park.

Organizers are hoping the Freeport community will rally around the event and push for a repeat.

Wow, $35 is too much? Really? Tickets for Chevelle concert alone run about $30....and tack onto that seeing Tonic, Filter, Everclear (who were bad), and Los Lonely Boys? I had a great time and only knew of the festival when I happened to see an ad in the RedEye while riding the CTA train home from work. More advertising needed in the future (and less $$ for parking....$15 was crazy).

A friend of mine heard an add on radio, and we drove from Rockford. In this economy I was shocked at the price not to mention $10.00 parking fee. We left. I am not sure of the band, but I myself would like to enjoy the fair at $5.00 entrance and purchase grandstand tickets for other attractions if I desired to do so. There was not a discount for attending just for fun and walk around even at 9:00 PM. Dissapointed, but not spending $10.00 parking and $70.00 entrance 2 people, plus adders as drink and food.

Great time but need better known bands. 80's bands or Country would have brought in a crowd 10X that size. Even Katie Perry or Lady GaGa would be better then the ones they had atleast the kids would make their parents bring them.

The price of getting into the festival each day was entirely too high. $35 per person is ridiculous for one day. Festivals here in Rockford, Beloit and even Milwaukee are so much cheaper. It doesn't make sense to say you are expecting a huge crowd each day in today's economy. Make it easier to afford for the families and they will come. The minute my friends heard of this festival they all became excited, until the prices were posted. Then it was, Absolutely not!!!

Were you at the festival on Saturday night, Barb? I was, and I would say there was probably close to 7500 people there alone that night. 10000 over the weekend is not a stretch. Nowhere near the 40000 they were expecting, though. This was a great festival - the local bands were amazing, the headliners were pretty good, too. It's a shame that it wasn't more well attended - people would have had a good time if they had bothered to come out.

Saying that there were 10,000 concert goers is stretching the truth quite a bit. 1000 combined for 3 days would be closer to the truth, and that includes workers. If you want to add all the people that drove by to get a look at what was going on- there still wouldn't be 10,000. If you people want to succeed, you need to start being open and honest about things instead of sneaky and manipulative. What a turn off.

I thank WIFR for allowing comments on this subject, be it good, not so good, or indifferent. This festival was not planned well at all. They really need to look at the demographics for this area and re think their plans. One of the local promoters, Aubra Palermo asks for comments and suggestions on the festival web site openly in the Journal Standard. When she put that out, then they need to post all comments. Not just the good, but also the not so good. They have been very good at censoring the comments.Especially the one's dealing with the single concert goer who was assaulted by 6 security members.I thought this whole thing was supposed to be about "Peace" Ms. Palermo. Re-think your priorities in Freeport and do a lot better planning and this might go some where in 10 or 15 years. When you ask for comments and get them, post them all. Not just the one's that you think might make you look good.
