ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A plan to split the Forest City into three policing districts is close to reality after more than a year of planning.

The pilot program to test out geographic policing will start in January, even though aldermen still haven't signed a lease on the building to house the first of three new proposed police stations. A building on 7th street near District 205 headquarters is the proposed site for the police station for district 2. At the start of 2013, the city will begin to implement geographic policing. Aldermen are still waiting to sign the lease but even if the department isn't moved into the 7th Street location in January, the mayor says geo-policing is moving forward in Rockford.

"What we're really talking about is supervisory authority, control; strategy development and execution, and accountability. Those things are at the heart of geo-graphic policing whether you're operating out of one building or three,” says Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey.

Eventually there will be three commanders to oversee each of the districts, those commanders will in turn answer to the Rockford police chief
