WASHINGTON D.C. (WIFR) -- A bill opening up options for veterans when it comes to healthcare is now heading to President Obama’s desk.

The Veterans Access to Care Act recently passed. The bill allows veterans to use their own doctors if the wait lists at VA facilities are preventing them from getting healthcare.

Republican congressional candidate for the 17th district Bobby Schilling says the bill is similar to legislation he pushed for when in office.

"I think that it's only fair that veterans, rather than only having the VA as an option, that they should be allowed to visit their local doctor or hospital or specialist throughout the United States of America. I mean, these are the folks that defended our freedom,” Schilling said.

Schilling lost to current U.S. Representative Cheri Bustos back in 2012.
