Rockford 5th Grade Student in National Spelling Bee

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A Rockford fifth grader is also in the national spotlight for spelling.

Kodai Speich, 10, is heading to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The Washington Academy student spelled the word "ameliorate" for the big win at the regional tournament. The last time a fifth grader took home the grand prize was in 2-08. Speich says he's ready for the match.

"I want to break a record that nobody has ever beat in Rockford.I don't think anybody has gone to the semi finals yet and that's what I want to do rounds three and four and five," Speich said.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee starts Tuesday in Washington D.C.
