ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- When students return to Northern Illinois University in just a little over a week it will be the last year on campus they'll be able to smoke.
That's true now for any public college in the state. Governor Pat Quinn signed a law Sunday, banning both indoor and outdoor smoking at all state supported colleges and universities. The ban takes effect July 1, 2015.
There are some exceptions. Lighting up inside privately owned vehicles traveling through campus is allowed.
Several colleges have already adopted smoke-free policies.
