ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Some people say there’s no pain like childbirth, which is why many moms choose to get an epidural during labor. However, some women are choosing to bring life into the world without any pain relief.

“Most people think I’m pretty crazy. Like, why would you choose to have that pain if you can get an epidural?”

Tara Gunderson is pregnant with her fourth child and says she refuses to take any medications during labor, especially an epidural. An epidural is a shot to the spinal cord, numbing the body.
“My husband’s a chiropractor so we chose just to go the drug free route and let my body basically naturally do the cues.”

Gunderson says her husband hears complaints of back problems from moms who’ve had epidurals. The CDC reports an epidural can sometimes cause severe headaches, fever, hypertension, and a longer labor.

“It seems like a lot of people are starting to do the water births, home births, a lot of different things going more natural.”

“I don’t think there’s been a change. My experience is the vast majority of women do like epidurals while they’re in labor for pain relief,” says SwedishAmerican OB-GYN Dr. Tim Durkee.
Dr. Durkee says epidurals or other pain medications don’t have long-lasting effects.

“Some women will have a doula to help with pain management if they desire to do it that way.”

“It is an empowering experience to see what your body can do when you actually feel everything,” says Gunderson.

Gunderson says she doesn’t think about the pain, instead, she focuses on seeing her newborn baby for the first time.

Doctors say there are benefits to mothers if they choose to get an epidural. It allows moms to rest during a long labor and can help with exhaustion and irritability. Doctors say it’s best for pregnant moms to ask questions prior to your delivery.
