Model of WWII Memorial On Display in Rockford

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Families in the Stateline can take a trip to the country’s WWII Memorial without having to take a plane to Washington, DC.

The original scale model of the memorial was unveiled on Saturday at Veterans Memorial Hall in downtown Rockford. The group called Pillars of Honor takes the miniature memorial all over the country. Organizers say with less than three million WWII survivors left in the country, the traveling exhibit is a great chance for those war heroes to see the model since many can't make the trip to Washington, DC
.
“Sometimes they're in tears. They say nobody's ever thanked us before, they weren't able to make it to Washington and they're very impressed. It's very humbling for them which they are, they're very humble anyway." says Noreen Lake from Pillars of Honor.

The scale model memorial weighs 800 pounds. When it's done traveling the country it will be on display in the Smithsonian.
