Habitat for Humanity Breaks Ground on Future Homes

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – With typical high costs of a mortgage, some people don’t have the means to buy a new home. That’s where Habitat for Humanity steps in.
Habitat for Humanity has been providing families in need with affordable living for the last 26 years and today, they made two more wishes come true
.
“I’m very excited. It’s really an overwhelming feeling, but in a good way,” said future homeowner Kasia Whitley. “I wasn’t expecting to get my home this year. I was on the back-up. List so I was supposed to be next year and I just got the call last week so that’s very exciting.”

Kasia Whitley has lived with her parents since her divorce and has been unable to move back out, but thanks to Habitat, she will be a first time homeowner by the end of the year.

The organization broke ground on two lots on Arnold Avenue in Rockford which includes Whitley’s future house. With much lower mortgage payments, habitat homeowners get a chance to provide their family with the life they’ve always wanted.

“They’ll realize several hundred dollars additional money each month. That’ll help with school supplies, that’ll help with furthering their education. Just think about having that extra money each month and they’ll be in a safe, affordable home with an attached garage and yard for their children to play in.” says Tonya Thayer with Habitat for Humanity.

In total, the organization will be a part of three builds this summer, with one near 20th and Harrison. Habitat says this is the first time it is constructing homes in the 61108 zip code. The new houses should be ready to move into this fall. At the end of construction, Habitat for Humanity will add up all of the bills and sell the home at cost. The organization says typically they sell back houses to the new homeowners for around $65,000.
