UPDATE: Police now believe an argument led to a car ending up in the Rock River near the Morgan Street Bridge.
The owner of the Ford Contour pulled out of the water yesterday afternoon says his car was taken without permission after fighting with a friend. Rockford fire crews did not find anyone inside the car when it was found.
ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A pair of fishermen in Rockford got home empty handed but they do have quite a tale after finding a car in the Rock River near the Morgan Street Bridge.
They say they spotted the roof of the car barely showing above the shallow water and at first thought it was a piece of metal. They called 9-1-1 to come check it out a little after 12:00 p.m.
The fire department's dive team hooked up the car and then it was towed out of the water. No one was inside.
Rockford police don't know if the car was stolen. They do have the VIN number to track down its owner.
Two fishermen spotted a car submerged near the Morgan Street Bridge. Rockford Fire Department Water Rescue teams are here. Its not clear how long the car's been there.
The fishermen say they didn't see anyone drive Into the water.
