ROCKFORD (WIFR) – The trial is underway for a man accused of killing a Harlem High School swim coach in a DUI accident back in 2014.
Investigators say 48-year-old George White Jr. was driving on North Second Street near Y boulevard in Rockford when he lost control of his car, crossed two medians and hit a guard rail.
White’s car crashed into 57-year-old David Logterman's truck, killing Logterman. White faces several charges including DUI, failure to report an accident or death, reckless homicide with a motor vehicle, and driving on a revoked license.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A Rockford man accused of causing a fatal car crash and leaving the other driver to die on the side of the road believes he’s innocent.
46-year-old George White Jr. plead not guilty in court today. Investigators say White was driving on N. 2nd Street near Y Boulevard in Rockford when he lost control of his car, crossed two medians and hit a guard rail.
White’s car landed on top of 57-year-old Dave Logterman’s truck who was pronounced dead at the scene. White is charged with DUI, leaving the scene of a traffic crash involving death, failing to report an accident and aggravated driving after losing his license. He wasn’t legally able to drive in the first place.
UPDATE: A local father is dead and another is in custody after officers say a man was drinking and driving when he crashed into a truck and tried to run from the scene. The victim in this accident was a well-known swim coach.
Dave Logterman retired last year from coaching the boy's swimming team in the Harlem School District. Family members tells us he loved traveling and golf. He also worked for SwedishAmerican Health System as an MRI technologist. Logterman was killed just after five this morning on North 2nd St. near Y Blvd.
The accident happened around 5 a.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of 251 near the ramp to the Whitman Street Bridge. The initial investigation revealed that the driver of a white Chevy Impala, who police have identified as 46-year-old George White, was heading north on Longwood, merging on to N. 2nd Street when he lost control of his vehicle.
Police say White drove over two medians striking a guard rail before going airborne and landing on Logterman's red pick-up truck, which was heading south on 251.
Police report that White fled the scene on foot but was taken into custody a short time later. He was charged with aggravated DUI, leaving the scene of a traffic crash involving death, and aggravated driving after revocation.
Both the north and southbound lanes near the scene were closed until about 2:30 Tuesday afternoon.
ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Roads will remain closed near the area of a fatal car accident that happened just before 5 this morning.
Due to the crash and the investigation the following roads will be closed until the investigation has been completed.
• Closed at N. 2nd and Y Blvd. Traffic flows to Madison, then South.
• Closed at N. 3rd at Hill St. Traffic will flow West onto the Whitman interchange to Main, Main north to Harlem.
• Closed at Whitman to N. 2nd. Traffic will flow around to 6th Street and can cross back over to Longwood to travel north.
The Winnebago County Coroner was on scene of the accident indicating this was a fatal crash.
