ROCKFORD (WIFR) – A Rockford man accused of causing a fatal car crash and leaving the other driver to die on the side of the road believes he’s innocent.

46-year-old George White Jr. plead not guilty in court today. Investigators say White was driving on N. 2nd Street near Y Boulevard in Rockford when he lost control of his car, crossed two medians and hit a guard rail.

White’s car landed on top of 57-year-old Dave Logterman’s truck who was pronounced dead at the scene. White is charged with DUI, leaving the scene of a traffic crash involving death, failing to report an accident and aggravated driving after losing his license. He wasn’t legally able to drive in the first place.

UPDATE: A local father is dead and another is in custody after officers say a man was drinking and driving when he crashed into a truck and tried to run from the scene. The victim in this accident was a well-known swim coach.

Dave Logterman retired last year from coaching the boy's swimming team in the Harlem School District. Family members tells us he loved traveling and golf. The accident happened around 5 a.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of 251 near the ramp to the Whitman Street Bridge. The initial investigation revealed that the driver of a white Chevy Impala, who police have identified as 46-year-old George White, was heading north on Longwood, merging on to N. 2nd Street when he lost control of his vehicle.

Police say White drove over two medians striking a guard rail before going airborne and landing on Logterman's red pick-up truck, which was heading south on 251.
