Complaints at Local VA Clinic


ROCKFORD (WIFR) – Just weeks after claims that thousands of veterans had to wait months to see a doctor, a few local vets say they’re having the same problem.

“How can they be so busy that I can’t get through to my nurse?”

93-year-old WWII veteran William Dugan says he’s never had a problem with Rockford’s VA clinic until now.

“Why, I don’t know. I was on the phone for 3 weeks now trying to get through to Linda Parish or make an appointment with her,” Dugan said.

Dugan is legally blind and says he’s trying to visit his doctor because he’s been having chest pains.

“She would know which pill I could take with which pill but I can’t get through to see my doc.”

A representative for the local clinic says the average waiting time for a new patient is two weeks.

“I’ve never gotten in there in 2 weeks, usually 6 or 7, 5 weeks.”

Vietnam war vet Ron Powless says he’s not only upset with scheduling issues but he’s disappointed with overall patient care.

“I was there 2 weeks ago to get blood work done and I was there for half an hour. I got there half an hour early, nobody was there to get blood work done but me and I stood around for half an hour.”
A few veterans say they hope these issues can be fixed soon so they can live healthier lives.

Just last week Congresswoman Cheri Bustos says some patients told her they’re satisfied with their care. However, Bustos says administrators told her they’d like an updated scheduling system. The house voted last week for the “Veterans Access to Care” Act that would allow veterans to get treated at non-VA facilities in certain situations.
