BELVIDERE (WIFR) – We of course shouldn’t be outside for more than 5 minutes, but what about our pets?

Owners of Summerfield Zoo in Belvidere are taking care of their animals that are mostly indoors now. Only the wolves and reindeer remain outside because they’re used to even colder temperatures. Owner Rick Anderson says there’s ways to take care of pets in this cold that are used to being outside.

“Just make sure it’s got some sort of shelter, even a wind break and people don’t think about giving them as much water when it’s cold but they can actually get dehydrated in this cold weather too.”

Anderson says for Summerfield’s animals, he’s increased their portion sizes at meal time and thrown in some extra straw for their bedding.
