ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Literacy Council has been awarded an $8,000 grant by Howard D. Coleman Memorial Fund and charitable contributions from Schneider Electric Buildings, LLC Charitable Fund of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois.

“People struggling with reading skills find using a computer extremely difficult. In our world today, gathering information and searching for employment is so dependent on using technology. Our classes are focused on the needs of lower level readers and give them the skills they need to access new ways of learning or finding jobs while reducing the intimidation computers bring to someone who has never used one.”

“Our agency has offered basic computer and job search skills classes for the last 5 years. Just this past year, seven participants were able to search out jobs they wanted, develop a resume, apply for them and eventually were hired.” Waddick said. “When they get a better job, their lives and their family’s life improves. Instead of needing supplemental funding from the government to survive, they become self-sufficient. The grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois will give us the necessary resources to continue offering these much needed classes this year.”

The Literacy Council was founded in 1985 and serves Boone, Winnebago and northern Ogle Counties by offering small classes or one-on-one volunteer tutoring in reading and English. The computer classes are offered at the Rockford office. Paul Hartzog is President of the Board of Directors.

The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois is the area’s largest provider of grants and scholarships. Its mission is to attract, grow, and preserve an endowment for the needs of the people of Northern Illinois.
