UPDATE: A Rockford man has been sentenced to spend 60 years in prison for First Degree Murder.

34-year-old Leonard Fricks says he shot and killed 26-year-old Martin Jefferson in May of 2011. The murder happened behind the Logli's Supermarket on Rockford Avenue.

Fricks will be sentenced on February 28, 2013.


ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A fugitive accused of being a danger to our families is off the streets.

The cousin of the Director of CeaseFire was arrested in Arkansas for being the alleged trigger man in a fatal shooting.

Police say 31-year-old Leonard Fricks was caught in Little Rock today.

He has been on the run since May 20th when Martin Jefferson was found shot to death near the Rockton Avenue Shopping Center in Rockford. Fricks' brother, Rakeem Fricks, was already arrested. An extradition hearing is not scheduled at this time.

Fricks tried to give a false name during his arrest in Arkansas.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Fricks Senior tells 23 News that his cousins are the two men accused of killing 26-year-old Martin Jefferson outside the Rockton Logli's last Friday night.

18-year-old Rakeem Fricks was arrested and charged with mob action. 31-year-old Leonard Rommell Fricks is still on the loose. Police say he was the shooter.

Fricks' own son was murdered last year. He says the news only makes this difficult time worse.

"You try to get the word across to people in general, and you just really hope your family gets the word. And I think they do get the word, you just can't predict what happens. You can't predict what happens to people in general," says Fricks.

Fricks says he is more qualified for his job since his family has been on both sides of violent crimes.

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- On Friday May 20th, 2011 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Rockford Police Officers responded to a report of a shooting at 2815 Overdene (Summerdale Park). Officers arrived and located 26 year old Martin Jefferson suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital by the Rockford Fire Department where he later died.

Rockford Police Detectives are investigating this incident and have reviewed the investigation thus far with the Winnebago County States Attorney’s Office. After review, the following warrant and charge has been authorized:

Arrested and in custody: Rakeem D. Fricks Age 18 Charge: Felony Mob Action

Wanted on warrant: Leonard Rommel Fricks Age 31

Charge: Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm
Unlawful Use of Weapon by Felon
BOND $ 500,000.00

Detectives continue to investigate this incident and additional charges are possible. Anyone with information on the location of Leonard Rommel Fricks is asked to call police or Crimestoppers at (815-963-7867).

Both suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Photos of both suspects are not available due to the ongoing nature of this investigation.
