They're loud and starting next month they'll be coming by the millions. A warning tonight, red eyed and winged Cicadas will emerge for the first time in 17 years.

The insects have been living underground for almost 2 decades when the soil reaches 65 degrees they'll tunnel up through the dirt, make their way up trees and other vertical surfaces, and then start making noise.

For several weeks their sole purpose is to search for mates and lay eggs in branches before they die. While they can be annoying, don't worry, they're not dangerous

Our modern sealed office building is no match for the cicada song surrounding us at River/Higgins, then both North and South along River Road. They are flying, climbing and falling everywhere in astonishing numbers. I'm enjoying the spectacle - of course it helps that they're harmless....
