DETROIT (AP) -- Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will spend the night in jail, after violating the terms of his bond.

In announcing his decision, District Court Judge Ronald Giles said it was the same thing he would have ordered for any "John Six-Pack" defendant before him.

The order was the result of an unauthorized trip Kilpatrick made to Canada last month. Kilpatrick's lawyers say they intended to ask that he be released on appeal.

Earlier today, Kilpatrick waived his right to a preliminary examination and will go to trial on perjury and other criminal charges that could land him a 15-year prison stretch.

The mayor should know that the law applies to EVERYBODY, and if violates bond, he should go to jail.
