The Winnebago County Department of Health says they have seen several cases of the West Nile virus within birds, but no human cases have been reported.
Though the threat isn't very large right now, it only takes one mosquito to spread the virus. Symptoms of West Nile are similar to those of the flu. The Winnebago County Health Department says to be safe whenever going outside.
"People should still be wearing long sleeve shirts with pants to protect themselves especially after dusk," said Brian Letton of the Winnebago County Board of Health. " And they should apply mosquito repellent with DEET."
The Winnebago County Health Department says many people are actually immune to the West Nile virus, but the virus is so well known because it can affect people of all ages.
If you are suffering from flu like symptoms, you're encouraged to check with your doctor to see if you've contracted the virus.
