ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Accidents started piling up early this morning and didn't stop until after rush hour tonight.
Rockford Police Deputy Chief Lori Sweeney said the first snowfall is the busiest day of the year for Rockford Police.
But there were no fatal accidents and most people weren't hurt.
"There were enough accidents today that the department had to go on the emergency accident plan," said Rockford Police Officer Joe Caltagerone. That means an officer didn't show up at every accident.
If nobody was hurt and cars could still be driven, people were encouraged to exchange personal information and be on their way.
There weren't more patrols on the streets, but officers typically not on traffic duty took over accident duty today.
"The patrol officers end up doing more traffic related duties today," Caltagerone said.
He spent a good part of his day tracking down a hit and run driver who left his car after a crash and walked the rest of the way to work. And it wasn't just accidents...a lot of people ran out of gas.

The Rockford Police Department did an outstanding job under the circumstances. Their job would have been made much easier and there would have been far fewer accidents had the mayor put the PLOWS out earlier. For most of the day they salted and turn snow to slippery slush instead of REMOVING it from the street. The mayor can't cry poor mouth because December was an easy month and the street department had the money.Once again "His Honor" put money over public safety.
