ROCK COUNTY (WIFR) -- Janesville's police chief wants people who arrested or convicted for drunk driving to have to wear alcohol monitoring bracelets.
It's an idea being tossed around by the Rock County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. The bracelets detect when someone's been drinking by monitoring vapors coming out of the skin.
If someone's on probation for driving drunk, drinking alcohol could send them to jail - a punishment that's not normally given to drunk drivers in Wisconsin.
There's a chance offenders would have to pay for their own bracelets, saving taxpayers money. While it's just a proposal at this stage Janesville's police chief says it's a no-brainer.
Last year more than 800 people were charged with driving drunk in rock county. In September Rock County launched a special operating while intoxicated court.
