Habitat for Humanity Builds 100th Rockford Home

A local non-profit reaches a major milestone this weekend, after providing yet another roof over a stateline family.

Habitat for Humanity dedicated it's 100th home Saturday. The organization has been in our area since 1988. The houses are built by dozens of volunteers who then give the structures to low-income families who end up paying the construction costs. The recipients actually put nearly 300 hours into the building. The organization calls it "sweat equity".

"I think Habitat for Humanity is one of Rockford's best kept secrets," said Habitat executive director Tonya Thayer. "To think that we now have a hundred homes in the city of Rockford. A hundred families paying property taxes putting into the schools, the police, the fire, the streets."

The organization also dedicated two other homes Saturday.
