Roosevelt Elementary Students Win High Honors

Posted: 2:52 PM Jan 23, 2013

JANESVILLE (WIFR) -- Two students representing Roosevelt School recently won highest honors in this year’s WordMasters Challenge, a national language arts competition.

Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the Challenge, third grader Alena Feldt and fourth grader Zoe Cross earned a perfect score in the year’s first meet, held in December. In the entire country, only 38 third graders and 30 fourth graders earned perfect scores. Other students who also achieved outstanding results in the meet included fifth graders Auna Pokel and Kerington Sauser. The school’s students were coached for the Challenge by Lynn Little, Lori Lowe, and Beth Ulring.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies. Working to solve the Challenge helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. The students will participate in two more WordMasters meets during the coming months.
