ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Todd Smith makes his first appearance in court following his arrest on charges related to the death of his wife Katrina Smith.

Smith faces 5 charges, including first degree murder and concealing a homicide. He faces up to 100 years in prison for two of the charges. If found guilty, he could also pay a $25,000 fine for each count against him.

Smith did not enter a plea on Saturday but he was appointed a public defender. Smith said his family is trying to hire a lawyer but they aren't sure if they can afford it..

Smith appeared from the Winnebago County Jail via closed circuit television. He was polite to the judge but became upset when asked if he has the funds to pay for a lawyer. None of Katrina Smith's family members were in the court room.

Smith will be arraigned in December. His bond is set a $4 million.
