NIU police chief placed on administrative leave

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) -- Northern Illinois University has placed its police chief on administrative leave and is firing another officer over the department's handling of a sexual assault case.

A county judge found a week ago that an NIU police investigator intentionally withheld evidence in the case of a former NIU police officer accused of sexually assaulting a student at the school.

The university announced Saturday that police chief Donald Grady was placed on administrative leave pending the finalization of charges and disciplinary actions.

NIU said police Lt. Kartik Ramakrishnan was notified that the university intends to fire him.

DeKalb County Judge Robin Stuckert found on Nov. 2 that Ramakrishnan failed to reveal statements from friends of the alleged assault victim saying she had a consensual relationship with the officer charged in the case.
