Posted: 7:53 PM Oct 6, 2012

FREEPORT (WIFR) -- Tens of thousands of suicides are reported annually and now dozens of local families are working together to lower that statistic..

On Saturday, Freeport residents turned out for the Out of Darkness Walk. Stateline communities will be holding these types of rallies throughout the month to highlight the effects of depression and other mental illnesses. More than two hundred people are participating in this year's event. Groups will stroll a short distance to raise money for research.”

“It's called the Out of the Darkness Walk; it gives the subject of suicide out of the darkness. We hope we can prevent any other losses,” says Rita Reeder, who helped organize Saturday’s walk.

Walkers also brought photos of those lost to suicide.
