RPS Selects Dr. Ehren Jarrett as Next Superintendent

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- After hours of discussion, the Rockford Public School board has chosen its next superintendent, Dr. Ehren Jarrett.

School board members went into closed session tonight and came out three hours later with a decision; current assistant superintendent Dr. Ehren Jarrett will be the next superintendent.

It was a close decision between Jarrett and assistant superintendent Matt Vosberg. The two candidates were interviewed on Saturday but board members say they needed more time to discuss since both men were such good candidates.

Neither Jarrett nor Vosberg were at tonight's meeting but school board president Harmon Mitchell says it was a tough decision.

Mitchell said, "They were so equal that's why it took two sessions, back and forth, back and forth. But we did reach a consensus. All the board members are essentially happy with the decision."

Mitchell would not say whether the decision to hire Jarrett was unanimous. Meantime a contract still needs to be negotiated so a salary has not been agreed upon. The district will do a study of similar districts to see what their superintendents make. Mitchell says that contract should be approved within the next couple of weeks.

Jarrett will take over as superintendent on July 1, 2013 with a three-year contact. And even though Vosberg didn't get the job, his contract does keep him in District 205 through the 2013-2014 school year so he is expected to stick around.
