This program will look at two case studies: the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden Colorado, and the 2011 Team New Jersey Solar Decathalon Project. Although vastly different in scope, both of these buildings use the thermal mass of precast concrete, in conjunction with a holistic design approach, to take the building to "net zero." Each project brings a novel approach to the same concept -- showing how designers can use massing to reduce energy and integrate many systems into one building product. Additionally, we will look at several of the key ideas that designers use to approach net zero.
