JANESVILLE (WIFR) -- Heart disease is the leading cause of death, of most Americans, with a heart attack occurring about every 20 seconds. That's why emergency medical services in Janesville wants to make they are ready.

Members of the Mercy Hospital Trauma Center, local ambulance services and the American Heart Association held an emergency drill Wednesday. It started in the Blaine's Farm & Fleet. Where a mock heart attack victim was first treated in the field by EMT's and Paramedics. Doctors say its important to start treatment as early as possible.

Dr. Gene Gulliver says, "The old saying is that time is muscle... Time is heart muscle is what that means. And so if we are already ready and waiting in the cath lab for a patients arrival, then we are already way ahead of the game, than if they just walked through the door and were having symptoms."

Today's drill was away for the hospitals to test their procedure for heart attack victims, which is to have a patients inside the operating room with in 90 minutes of being treated in the field by paramedics.
